UC Summer Abroad programs offer students short, intensive academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of excursions and cultural activities. All UC programs are built around UC courses and are led by world-class UC faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Class sizes are small — 18-30 students — allowing for an intimate learning experience. UC Summer Abroad is open to all University of California students and students from other US institutions.


Africa and the Middle East

Ghana, West African Dance Abroad (UC Riverside)

Ghana is one of Africa’s fastest-growing, more diverse economies and is held as a model for peace and democracy on the continent. Come study and live alongside Ghanaian and international students.

Israel, Start Up Nation (UC San Diego)

Jerusalem, one of the most fascinating cities on earth, provides an ideal setting for students to gain an in-depth understanding of the complexities of Israel’s history, politics, religion, society and culture.

Namibia, Functional Ecology and Herpetology in Namibia (UC Riverside)

This is a combined field and lecture course that focuses on the biology of amphibians and "reptiles" by exploring their diversity, physiology, ecology, evolution, behavior, and biomechanics. There will be a focus on lizards, snakes, and amphibians of southern Africa, with an emphasis on Namibia.

South Africa, City to Safari (UC Davis)

Experience the literature, history, and culture of South Africa while in the amazing waterfront city of Cape Town and on safari. See elephants, rhinoceros, buffalos, lions, and leopards!

South Africa, Healthcare Challenges in Cape Town (Internship) (UC Davis)

Witness efforts to address health inequities amongst underserved communities. Participants will work with local NGOs, helping with community-based health initiatives and participate in clinical rotations at hospitals in a variety of wards.

South Africa, Hospital Medicine & Infectious Disease in Durban (Internship) (UC Davis)

Participate in clinical rotations in the heartland of Zulu culture, in a dynamic beach city. Join local   healthcare teams serving a large teaching hospital, and learn about the impact HIV/AIDS has on the community.

South Africa, Change in Modern South Africa (UC San Diego)

United Kingdom, Modern Literary London (UC Riverside)

This special double course takes place in central London, UK. Students will study the modern poems, short stories, novels, and cultural history that have constructed London as a global city, while living there and experiencing it firsthand.

United Kingdom, Random Walks (UC Riverside)

In this course we will develop the language of probability theory and its logical structure. We will use this language to study randomness and we will come to understand how order can emerge from randomness in certain and predictable ways.

United Kingdom, Subcultural Affiliations: Transatlantic Popular Cultures (UC Riverside)

This study abroad program in Scotland introduces students to cultural studies by highlighting key terms and concepts that have come to define the field.
