2019 PROGRAMS

UC Summer Abroad faculty-led programs offer students short, intensive academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of excursions and cultural activities. All UC programs are built around UC courses and are led by world-class UC faculty, administered by a UC campus. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Class sizes are small — 18-30 students — allowing for an intimate learning experience. UC Summer Abroad is open to all University of California students and students from other US institutions.

Africa and the Middle East

Israel, Internship (UC Berkeley)

Gain first-hand knowledge, connections, and international work experience through an academic internship in Israel.

Israel, Start Up Nation (UC San Diego)

Jerusalem, one of the most fascinating cities on earth, provides an ideal setting for students to gain an in-depth understanding of the complexities of Israel’s history, politics, religion, society and culture.

Namibia, Functional Ecology and Herpetology in Namibia (UC Riverside)

This is a combined field and lecture course that focuses on the biology of amphibians and "reptiles" by exploring their diversity, physiology, ecology, evolution, behavior, and biomechanics. There will be a focus on lizards, snakes, and amphibians of southern Africa, with an emphasis on Namibia.

Ghana, Pediatric Care and Reproductive Health - Internship (UC Davis)

Join local medical professionals in the historic Children’s Hospital and see how these professionals provide care in a resource-scarce environment. Rotate through a variety of wards while learning about the social and economic conditions that affect pediatric health.

South Africa, Healthcare Challenges in Cape Town - Internship (UC Davis)

Witness efforts to address health inequities amongst underserved communities. Participants will work with local NGOs, helping with community-based health initiatives and participate in clinical rotations at hospitals in a variety of wards.

South Africa, Hospital Medicine & Infectious Disease in Durban - Internship (UC Davis)

Participate in clinical rotations in the heartland of Zulu culture, in a dynamic beach city. Join local   healthcare teams serving a large teaching hospital, and learn about the impact HIV/AIDS has on the community.

South Africa, Anthropology of Africa (UC Riverside)

Examine global Africa by looking at ways in which Africa is shaping (and being shaped by) the world historically and currently.

Australia, Agriculture and Veterinary Science - Internship (UC Davis)

Experience the challenges of providing pediatric care to diverse, low-income populations, including indigenous groups. Participants will rotate alongside local pediatricians at clinics and hospitals, including the country’s largest children’s hospital.

Bolivia, Primary Care & Rural Medicine - Internship (UC Davis)

Join healthcare teams in urban hospitals and rural clinics in the picturesque city of Tarija. Learn about the importance of preventative medicine and about pathologies not commonly seen in North America, like Chagas disease.

Brazil, The Black Diaspora in Brazil (UC Riverside)

By interacting directly with activists and their organizations in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador, students gain insight on (1) social problems affecting Black and impoverished communities, and (2) the process by which emerge the responses generated within such communities to address the problems.
